Dahua Technology helps secure the longest carnival in the world - Carnaval del País

Located in the city of Gualeguaychú in Argentina, Carnaval del País is a festive season that runs for two whole months, holding the world record as the longest carnival in the world.  It is full of lively events featuring energetic samba dancers dressed in sequins and feathers as well as parades of colourful and beautifully crafted floats. To accommodate the event, the city built its own Sambadrome called the Corsódromo, the first of its kind in Argentina. It has an extension of 500 metres long and a track width of 10 useful metres, which can hold up to 38,000 spectators. Challenges at Carnaval del País Implementing an outdoor video monitoring solution that can cover a capacity of 38,000 people was a massive challenge and not an easy task for the entire team. The client required a surveillance system that can monitor the crowd’s security; from the moment they enter the stadium, watch and enjoy the show, until they leave the premises. Recorded video footage must also be readily available for further analysis in case of an incident. Solution: Vari-focal Bullet WizMind Network Cameras This intelligent camera is also equipped with deep-learning algorithms that enable intelligent functions The team deployed several types of Dahua cameras around Corsódromo to monitor the situation during the carnaval. A dozen 4MP IR Vari-focal Bullet WizMind Network Cameras (IPC-HFW5442H-ZHE) were deployed to cover various areas of the venue.  Aside from providing clear and vivid images, this intelligent camera is also equipped with deep learning algorithms that enable intelligent functions such as video metadata, smart object detection, people counting, and more. It has an IP67 waterproof rating and an IK10 vandal-proof rating, making it durable and reliable for outdoor applications. Cameras installed Other cameras installed include 4MP 32x Starlight IR WizSense Network PTZ Cameras (SD5A432XB-HNR), 2MP 33x Starlight+Laser WizMind Network PTZ Camera (DH-SD6AL233XA-HNR), and Integrated Solar Monitoring System (DH-SD6C3432XB-HNR-AGQ-PV). After each show, the situation at the entrance is also analysed through the recorded footage (via NVR5216-8P-I/L) to reduce waiting/queuing time in the future. Integrated alarm systems All cameras are checked one day before each event to ensure their optimal condition and performance It also helps in deploying security personnel in the right location to avoid unauthorised entry, theft, or any misdemeanour. What’s more, cameras with integrated alarm systems were strategically installed in crucial zones and were supervised by dedicated personnel regularly.  All cameras are checked one day before each event to ensure their optimal condition and performance during the event. Results: Efficient monitoring solution The Dahua video monitoring solution deployed in Corsódromo for the Carnaval del País is a technological step forward from what it had in previous years. Through this new monitoring system, the management of the venue can efficiently monitor the situation inside the stadium and make necessary adjustments if needed. It helps optimise the entry time of spectators to avoid congestion and assists in assigning security personnel at crucial points around the venue to prevent incidents from happening; all of which contribute to the enhanced on-site experience of every spectator and improved security measures of Corsódromo.

The city of Jesús María in Argentina has invested in a 114-camera monitoring system from Dahua, to help provide safety to residents and to support security and emergency assistance departments (e.g. firefighting, ambulance) in case of emergency.  Challenges Jesús María is a vibrant busy city located in Cordoba Province. As such, the city needed an intelligent monitoring system to improve traffic flows and help the emergency services through heavy traffic.  Monitoring centre It must be able to ensure safe transit without obstacles and immediate arrival of the response team when needed, covering surrounding areas comprised of hospitals, schools, banks, municipal offices, etc. “The main challenge was to find the right solution and products so that the different municipal departments could benefit from the implementation of the monitoring centre,” said Marcos Romero of Dahua Technology in Argentina.  AI solutions AI solutions were presented, including how to apply them correctly to the way the city operates" Marcos Romero adds, “There were some very long meetings at which all of the AI solutions were presented, including how to apply them correctly to the way the city operates, and how to correct or modify aspects so that the work of all organisations flowed successfully.”  He continues, “This ranged from cameras with traffic analysis capabilities, to existing analogue PTZ and zoom cameras, all to ensure everything worked correctly with the operational software.” Solution  The advanced AI cameras are installed around the city’s infrastructure and are monitored in a state-of-the-art control centre.  Dahua equipment installed in Jesús María includes 8-port PoE switches, 4MP Lite IR varifocal bullet cameras, 2MP IR varifocal bullet cameras, 4MP ANPR cameras, Network/control/dome keyboard and joystick, 64-channel 8HDD WizMind NVRs, and 22-inch industrial-grade LCD monitors.  The availability of Dahua’s DSS PRO video management software which provides intuitive and seamless control of the entire system was a key factor that led to the selection of the all-Dahua solution. Results  Benefits It significantly improved local transportation safety, making sure that residents are secure The creation of ‘safe corridors’ within Jesús María has resulted in several benefits for the city and its residents. It significantly improved local transportation safety, making sure that residents are secure and emergency responders will be alerted and arrive in time without delay.  Improved efficiency “Since the implementation of the monitoring centre, work between the security departments and relevant transportation departments has improved markedly,” added Mr. Romero.  The implementation of Dahua’s intelligent solution is reported to have led to an increase in commercial activity and people in the city, as well as the improved efficiency of emergency services.

Preventing forest fires with Dahua's digital intelligence
Preventing forest fires with Dahua's digital intelligence

In 2020, the forest areas in Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province were reported to have reached 1.855 million hectares, ranking among the top in the country. In addition to absorbing carbon dioxide, conserving water sources, and maintaining water and soil, these ancient forests also shelter a large number of rare wild animals and plants. These natural wonders are a risk if a forest fire breaks out, causing drastic damage and endangering the inhabitants of the forest. Wireless transmission systems Since 2020, Dahua has been assisting Dali Prefecture in building front-end systems and installing wireless transmission systems in key protected zones as well as areas prone to forest fires. More than 500 cases of illegal use of fire in the wild and 7 cases of forest fires have been detected since then. 24/7 real-time monitoring  Dali Prefecture's forest coverage rate reached 65.51% in 2020. Twenty-eight nature reserves of various types and levels were established throughout the prefecture, with a total area of 181,000 hectares. The vast forest constitutes an ecological security barrier, but its massive area makes it difficult to monitor forest fires. "Burning straws, cooking fires, etc. are all common wildfires, but even seemingly insignificant areas can become the source of forest fires," a local forest ranger said. Visible light and thermal imaging technology The dual-spectrum thermal imaging cameras deployed in the forest enable the fire prevention video monitoring system Multiple round-the-clock patrol points were set up to monitor and observe the surrounding forest areas 24/7, with 3 people in each shift (changes every three days). The mountains are high and the slopes are steep, and sometimes thorns are everywhere, especially at night. Nevertheless, with the help of modern technology, these diligent forest rangers always persevere in accomplishing their tasks and duties. The dual-spectrum thermal imaging cameras deployed in the forest enable the fire prevention video monitoring system to complete an automatic cruising round in just 15 minutes. Based on visible light and thermal imaging technology, it can detect a fire source of about 2 square metres within a range of 5-10 kilometers. Accurate multi-dimensional positioning of fire source Flammable coniferous trees such as Yunnan pine and Huashan pine are widely spread in the forest areas of Dali Prefecture. Large-scale and high-intensity forest fires could start in these areas in a short period. In case of a sudden fire, quickly locating the source of the fire can add more significant time for firefighting.  Smart fire detection system  Technologies such as dual-spectrum video monitoring, intelligent image analysis and recognition, and three-dimensional positioning enable the smart system to detect a fire, quickly locate the fire source and automatically send an alarm to on-duty personnel. In forests with hundreds of hectares (or even thousands of hectares), the source of the fire can be accurately located within 50 metres, allowing the firefighting team to quickly reach the location and providing more time to control the fire.  The efficient investigation, assessment, and handling of the fire situation Extinguishing forest fires requires the full cooperation of the frontline and the command centre. The command centre quickly communicates with the frontline about firefighting strategies based on the actual fire situation. But how can they understand the situation at the scene if they are far away?  It enables operators to check and assess the situation in time, and quickly deal with the fire This particular job is handed over to the visual forest fire prevention video monitoring system. This smart security system synchronously displays real-time images in the monitoring centre, combined with other corresponding data such as space, time, fire type, etc. It enables operators to check and assess the situation in time, and quickly deal with the fire according to the corresponding plan.  Full coverage of network transmission in forest areas  Considering its vast areas, transmitting valuable information from the forest could be a daunting task. "The mountain area is large and widely spread. Sometimes, there’s even no mobile phone signal. To allow the command centre to see the scene in time, we also built a wireless transmission with front-end equipment." "The smart system covers all the video points in the forest and sends forest fire information back to the command centre in real-time," a Dahua technical engineer explained.  Early detection, reporting, and handling The forest fire prevention video monitoring system that Dahua helped build in Dali Prefecture offers wide-coverage, all-weather, high-precision, and intelligent 24/7 monitoring that can automatically detect fire and locate its source in time. Early detection, reporting, and handling of the fire situation using digital intelligence can effectively safeguard the safety of these local ecological barriers. With abundant experience in developing smart fire prevention systems, Dahua will continue to innovate and create technological breakthroughs to protect the environment and natural resources.

Milestone provides XProtect video management software to enhance security for Massachusetts General Hospital
Milestone provides XProtect video management software to enhance security for Massachusetts General Hospital

With 1,300 cameras recording 24/7 and more than 1,000 investigations to process per year, Massachusetts General Hospital’s security team was not able to keep up with the vast amounts of recorded video. Now, BriefCam Syndex Pro for fast video review, search and analysis, embedded within a Milestone XProtect video management software (VMS) platform is making efficient and effective video investigation possible. Unique challenges to security Massachusetts General Hospital’s (MGH) Police, Security and Outside Services Department provides some security services to many other Partners hospitals and facilities. Following its recent digital conversion, unified on the Milestone XProtect VMS platform, MGH’s security team was able to expand camera coverage by adding new Axis network cameras directly to the existing IP network. The hospital environment presents unique challenges to security, Michelman points out “The number of investigations we were doing was taking huge amounts of time in terms of reviewing video, and that was really a waste of time,” said Bonnie Michelman, MGH Executive Director of Police, Security and Outside Services and Consultant for Partners Healthcare. The hospital environment presents unique challenges to security, Michelman points out. MGH’s 17-acre urban campus, comprising 29 contiguous and 14 separate buildings (including underground and freestanding garage facilities), is complex. The security team must also take into account not only the main location, but also dozens of satellite facilities around the Boston area. Enterprise risk management “We can’t cover all of these facilities with security staff,” said Michelman. “We need to augment heavily with very good, state-of-the-art technology that allows us to combine our intelligence, labour, policies and procedures, in order to create a better holistic approach to enterprise risk management.” Charged with creating a safe environment, MGH’s security team at the same time is challenged by the clinical team’s needs for increased efficiency through lowering length of stay and moving patients through the hospital as quickly as possible. The 24-hour Emergency Room, with its anxious, highly volatile population presents challenges of its own. In addition, patient elopement and patient wandering – unauthorised departures from the medical facility, whether intentional or unintentional – pose liability threats that can be very damaging to a hospital. Providing customer satisfaction A unified system was required to balance the video surveillance needs of a busy hospital campus A unified system was required to balance the video surveillance needs of a busy hospital campus with remote satellite locations while upholding the highest level of security possible, maintaining operational flow, and providing customer satisfaction that includes expectations of privacy. Michelman, together with MGH Senior Manager, Systems and Technology Robert Leahy, decided on the Milestone XProtect VMS platform. Camera count was increased from 400 to 1,300, and standardised with Axis network cameras connected directly to the IP network. To deal with the marked increase in video data, MGH’s team chose BriefCam Syndex Pro, a powerful set of tools intended to reduce the time and effort needed to conduct video reviews, post-event video investigation and real-time video monitoring. The BriefCam solution ties in seamlessly with the Milestone video management solution, providing efficient workflow for investigators. Presenting video metadata According to Michelman, BriefCam has already proven invaluable. A two year long ROI examination of video surveillance use at MGH has shown a progressive rise in success rates with the use of video in incident investigations. According to Michelman, BriefCam has already proven invaluable “I see BriefCam as a very important part of our toolbox of excellent practices for protecting what is a very complex environment of tangible and intangible assets,” said Michelman. BriefCam Syndex Pro’s ability to present video metadata in graphic visualisation format, such as bar graphs, pie charts and the like, has opened up new realms of possibilities to extend the role of CCTV video beyond security into organisational efficiency and more informed, data-driven decision making. Better investigative focus “In the past, there might have been things that would have been a ‘nice to do,’ but we couldn’t do it because we didn’t have resources to watch many hours of video,” said Michelman. “Now we can manage the content and we can see trends, which in turn can drive redeployment of resources, and by extension, facilitate a better investigative focus and success.” BriefCam Syndex Pro embedded within Milestone XProtect VMS platform is helping MGH in its mission to effectively and efficiently protect and safeguard the hospital community. Michelman said: “We’re happy with these products, but it’s not just about the quality of the technology, it’s about the quality of the partnership. You know, it’s easy to sell a product, but to sustain it, service it, and be there after it is in is really very critical for us.”
