World leading digital expertise from Siemens
World leading digital expertise from Siemens

Siemens is already well established as a world leader in digital recording technology and with the announcement of an acquisition which will see Siemens responsible for the transition of the BBC from analogue to digital production in a €2.7 billion project, this expertise is set to be even further enhanced. The scope of Siemens investment, including its focus on digital competencies, is aptly demonstrated by the company's commitment to R&D.  As a business, Siemens operates some 150 R&D centres located throughout Europe, Asia and the US, all feeding into a pool of development - some 62,000 active patents, 30,000 software engineers operating in 30 counties. Central to the ongoing digital recording research is SISTORE CX, an intelligent digital video Codec for video transmission and recording, with additional functional enhancements already available, including Enhanced Detection Solution (EDS) and Object Detection & Removal (ODR). An example of Siemens commitment to digital systems and future-proofing of recording technology is the contract for the BBC which has seen Siemens acquire the BBC's own IT subsidiary - BBC Technology - with some 1,400 employees. Siemens is installing integrated digital production systems at the BBC in a ten and a half year project, with a contract also in place to install digital systems for ITV.  This will enable editors to edit their reports on a PC, plus access the archives to research, cut and provide the finished report to production, all from the same place.  The result will be more current reports and more flexible program production.

Enhanced detection and object detection and removal with SISTORE CX from Siemens

SISTORE CX is an intelligent digital video Codec for video transmission and recording, which now offers additional enhancements to meet market needs. Two of the modules available with SISTORE CX are SISTORE CX EDS and SISTORE CX ODR.  The addition of these modules through a simple software upgrade provides exceptional functionality, ensuring a future proof system on a platform, which undergoes continuous development.Enhanced Detection Solution (EDS)EDS is a functionality, which can be added via a software module to provide professional outdoor video motion detection.  This retrofit upgrade via a software licence offers motion detection, with object tracking, suitable for a variety of external applications.  Unlike many other systems, which simply compare one image with the next and check for changes, SISTORE CX EDS uses a statistical method.  The algorithm continuously analyses the video stream throughout its history.  To ensure the highest detection rate and minimal false alarms, track length and direction of the object can also be set.Object Detection and Removal (ODR)Again available via a software module, the algorithm based ODR provides the means by which unattended items can be detected.  The most obvious application is identifying a potential explosive device, making it an ideal solution for a number for applications, from airports and rail stations to retail complexes and hotels.  Beyond explosive detection, as the software identifies unattended objects, it can also be used to keep designated areas clear of obstruction, triggering an alarm if an abandoned object is blocking, for example, an access door.Developed using the latest Siemens technology, SISTORE CX is particularly suited for applications requiring video transmission and/or recording or as a video sensor in IP network installations.

Growing acceptance of IP in securityWith IP technology increasingly being the preferred option in video surveillance applications, Siemens introduces a new version of the popular SISTORE CX intelligent digital video CODEC.A recent survey has estimated a worldwide market value for IP in security of around $500 million, demonstrating how fast the market is developing.  Recognising and responding to this trend, Siemens offers a complete IP portfolio and will soon introduce the latest version of SISTORE CX which now offers the option of IP camera recording.Cost-efficient extension of installed systemsScalability is a focus of the new SISTORE CX, with the capacity to extend a system combining analogue equipment - which may already be installed - with new digital products, thereby offering significant savings.  In combination with the Siemens MPEG4 IP camera, the SISTORE CX can be used for video content analysis of the analogue video signal and for the recording of MPEG4 video streams.  With this combination of products and features, Siemens uses the best from classic, IP and network technologies.Efficient use of bandwidth capacity and multicast transmissionSISTORE CX can perform multiple tasks simultaneously.  Utilising MPEG4 technology, SISTORE CX offers the best compression rates with a low bandwidth requirement.  This lessens the impact on the IT network, freeing up bandwidth for other applications.  The SISTORE CX user-interface is set up like a "virtual matrix", displaying the video inputs on one side of the screen and the video outputs on the other.  Live images can be displayed on the VGA screen or a standard video monitor using a simple "drag and drop" operation.User-friendly systemSISTORE CX is easy to use and maintain.  With its user-friendly, web-based installation and configuration screen, SISTORE CX can be tailored to the application's needs with a few simple clicks.Multi recording optionsTo fulfil all the customer recording needs SISTORE CX is able to use internal RAID1, direct-attached storage (DAS) via SCSI or network-attached storage (NAS).  Compared with Network Recording Software, the central recording functions are free of charge.  One of the major benefits for the customer is that no additional licence costs are generated with this Siemens solution for central recording.
